Ice Bergs near Kosoak, Life Boat Cove (From a sketch by Dr Kane)
The American brigantine, Advance, was acquired for the second expedition organised by Dr Grimmell in 1853 to search for Franklin. She was abandoned in 1855 (H. Parker, 'Catalogue of the Macpherson Collection', unpublished). The Advance is depicted in a calm moonlit sea, dwarfed on either side by monumental ice bergs. Technique includes etching.
