Christ Rescuing St. Peter from the Sea
Christ walking on water rescuing Saint Peter (Matthew 14:26-31); in the foreground Christ with windswept hair, walks on a rough sea and holds the hands of the sinking Peter; beyond is a two-masted sailing ship with fore-and aft sails, from which the apostles gaze at the scene. The artist’s signature ‘D [star] V’ is at the stern of the ship. Inscribed ‘1525 / DES 30’ at top right corner, possibly referring to the date of creation as 30 December 1525.
This print appears to be part of a series illustrating the Life of Christ made over the course of two years. However, this is difficult to determine without a complete set.
There is a related pen-and-ink drawing in the Rijksmuseum of about identical size (RP-T-00-566; K. G. Boon, ‘Netherlandish drawings of the 15th and 16th centuries’, 1978, no. 458).
