A distant port side view of the topsail schooner Torbay Lass (1864) aground on the Cressars, off Penzance
A distant port side view of the topsail schooner Torbay Lass (1864) aground on the Cressars off Penzance, Mount's Bay. The ship is listing heavily to port so that the deck can be seen. The photograph was taken from near the water's edge, looking south. Later that day the schooner was towed off and sank.
The Brixham schooner Torbay Lass (1864) was under tow from St Michael's Mount after offloading coal. However, the Merlin tug failed to raise enough steam so the schooner drifted onto the Cressars off Penzance. The Lady of the Isles towed the schooner off, but it sank a few hundred yards off the reef, possibly close to Battery Rocks.
