A port side view, just aft of the broadside, of the French cargo steamer Saintonge (1882), semi-submerged with the stern low in water in Lamorna Cove, southwest of Mousehole. The cliffs and headland at Carn-du can be seen in the background. A small rowing is alongside the port broadside. The photographer was standing on the west side of the cove looking east.

The Saintonge (1882) was on passage from Bordeaux to Cardiff with a cargo of pit props when it ran aground in thick fog in Lamorna Cove early in the morning of 21 March 1895. The rocks had pierced the bottom of the hull and water had made it settle, lying 16ft at the bows and 25ft at the stern. Poor weather later prevented the ship being salvaged but the salvage firm saved the stores and materials before the ship was abandoned on 1 April 1895.
