The cargo steamer Blue Jacket (1882) aground on rocks off Longships Lighthouse.
Starboard view, just forward of the broadside of the iron screw steam cargo ship Blue Jacket (1882) aground on rocks off Longships Lighthouse, Land's End. The ship is low in the water from the stern to just after the bridge. The boat davits have been deployed with the ropes hanging down the side into the water. The photographer was in a boat near by to take this photograph.
The negative is a copy negative from an original Gibson photographic print.
At 5pm on 9 November 1898 Blue Jacket left Plymouth Sound on passage during thick weather and an east-south-east wind for Cardiff. The ship was in ballast. At 11.55pm it ran into the rocks about 30-50 feet below Longships Lighthouse. The crew, including the captain's wife, took to the boats and at about 2am on 10 November were rescued by the Sennan Cove lifeboat. The captain had his Master's Certificate suspended for six months. The ship was a total loss. [See Wreck Report court proceedings]. The ship broke in two on 14 November and the stern sank.
