The cargo ship Blue Jacket (1882) semi-submerged off Longships Lighthouse.

A starboard quarter view of the iron screw cargo steamer Blue Jacket (1882) semi-submerged by the stern with the bow out of water off the Longships Lighthouse, Land's End. The photographer was in a boat near by to take this photograph, having moved around the wreck so that the lighthouse now appears to the left of the ship.

The negative is a copy negative from an original Gibson photographic print.

At 5pm on 9 November 1898 Blue Jacket left Plymouth Sound on passage during thick weather and an east-south-east wind for Cardiff. The ship was in ballast. At 11.55pm it ran into the rocks about 30-50 feet below Longships Lighthouse. The crew, including the captain's wife, took to the boats and at about 2am on 10 November were rescued by the Sennan Cove lifeboat. The captain had his Master's Certificate suspended for six months. The ship was a total loss. [See Wreck Report court proceedings]. The ship broke in two on 14 November and the stern sank.
