The cargo steamer Brankelow (1882) ashore in heavy seas, Gunwalloe
A middle distant starboard bow view of the cargo steamer Branklelow (1882) aground broadside to beach at Gunwalloe (Church Cove), Cornwall. A large wave has broken in spray on the hull obscuring the bow to midship area. Groups of people on the beach in the background below the cliffs. Large waves are breaking on the beach in the foreground where the photographer was standing.
The Brankelow was on passage from Cardiff to Kronstadt with a cargo of coal when it grounded in light haze on 21 April 1890 off Gunwalloe, near Porthleven. Tugs and salvage vessels came to retrive the cargo but a south-westerly gale on 26 April stopped operations. Eventually the engines and fittings were removed before the ship broke up in the autumn of 1890.
