The schooner-rigged cargo steamer Setiembre (1889) aground on Hats Ledge, Crow Sound

A starboard bow view of the schooner-rigged Spanish steamer Setiembre (1889) aground on Hats Ledge, Crow Sound, to the north east of St Mary's Island, Isles of Scilly. The bow is higher out of the water than the stern and the starboard anchor has been dropped. A large wave is washing down the starboard side of the ship. The negative has been heavily altered with masking fluid to emphasise the detail of the clouds and the waves.

A glass copy negative of an original print.

The Setiembre was on passage from Porman to Maryland with a cargo of iron ore when it hit the Hats Ledge losing the rudder and holing the hold. The ship settled in the water during an easterly gale but could not be salvaged despite the cargo being jettisoned over the side to lighten the hull and reduce the strain on the plating. The ship was abandoned as a wreck on 11 April 1911.
