The general cargo ship Wimborne (1898) wrecked off Tol-Padn-Penwith, Cornwall.
A middle distant port bow view of the steel screw general cargo steamer Wimborne (1898) wrecked below the rocks off Tol-Padn-Penwith, two-and-a-half miles to the southeast of Land's End. The ship is semi-submerged from just aft of the the bridge to the stern. The stern section looks to have broken off and the top is just visible at an angle to the waves. Both anchors have been set and a line stretches from the stempost to the shore. The photographer was standing on the cliff top near Carn Guthenbras looking down at the wreck. More of the ship is above water, suggesting the tide has ebbed rather than it is an early image in the sequence - the stern is broken away from the rest of the hull, which is also in the other images of the ship.
This is a copy negative from an original print.
The Wimborne (1898) was on passage from Rotterdam to Barry in ballast, when it was caught in a gale and bad visibility, and ended up shore off the cliffs of Carn Guthenras and Top-Pedn-Penwith, Cornwall.
