A stern view of one of the surviving lifeboats from the wrecked passenger/cargo ship Mohegan (1898)
A stern view of one of the lifeboats from the wrecked passenger/cargo ship Mohegan (1898) on the beach. The tide is out, leaving the lifeboat resting on its port side on the rocks. The underside has been battered by the rocks. A number '4' is painted on the bow. The masts and funnel of the Mohegan can be seen in the backgrounds jutting above the water off the Manacles Rocks.
The Mohegan left London on 13 October 1898 with 97 crew, 17 cattlemen and 53 passengers, as well as 1,280 tons of general cargo. The ship was seen passing Eddystone Lighthouse at about 5pm on 14 October, some 10-12 miles out. The ship then ran onto the Manacle rocks at about 7pm. Some 102 people lost their lives.
