Scattered salvaged material on the grass above the foreshore from the wreck of the passenger/cargo ship Mohegan (1898)
Salvaged flotsam and life rings on the grass above the foreshore from the wreck of the passenger/cargo ship Mohegan (1898). On top of a wooden ladder, timbers and a door is a carefully propped-up life ring with 'Mohegan / Hull / No. 9' painted on it. Behind the life ring is a coth-covered cork life preserver placed on its side.
The Mohegan left London on 13 October 1898 with 97 crew, 17 cattlemen and 53 passengers, as well as 1,280 tons of general cargo. The ship was seen passing Eddystone Lighthouse at about 5pm on 14 October, about 10-12 miles out. Due to a navigational error, the ship then ran onto the Manacle rocks at about 7pm. Some 102 people lost their lives.
