The Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959) alongside the south wall in No.3 basin at Chatham Dockyard, near the end of her modernization which commenced 4 December 1967 and completed 4 June 1971. The photographer is looking forward and to port from the quayside abreast the aft superstructure showing the 27 feet whaler in its davits, the MRS 3 director, the 20 mm oerlikon gun, the covered 3 inch Knebworth-Corvus rocker launcher and her bow. Her pendant number is F115. The frigate Lowestoft (1960), pendant F103, is berthed ahead of the Berwick (1959) while on a visit with other members of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT). The Norwegian frigate Narvik (1965) is berthed outboard of the Lowestoft (1960).
