Alongside the Type 81 frigate Gurkha (1960) at the fitting out berth of John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd at Woolston, Southampton. The photographer is on the quayside abreast 64 station looking forward and to starboard showing the bridge, MRS 3 gun director, radar mast foremast and forefunnel. A ten inch signalling projector is in the bridge wing and liferaft stowage is abaft it. A single 40 mm bofors Mk. 9 gun is at the break of the forecastle on 01 deck and abaft it on 1 deck is the 25 feet motor cutter in its davits. At the top of the radar mast is the ANS cheese aerial for the type 293Q short range air search target indication radar and projecting to the rear at lower level is the MF/DF coil. Twenty inch signalling projectors are on the deck on either side of the radar mast. The lower platform on the foremast holds the ATZ cheese aerial for the type 978 high definition surface search radar. At the top of the foremast is the AKE1 mattress aerial for the type 965 long range air search radar. Abaft the forefunnel is the compass platform with liferaft stowage abreast it. A vertical format negative.
