On board the Type 81 frigate Gurkha (1960) alongside the fitting out berth of John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd at Woolston, Southampton. The photographer is on the port side of the helicopter landing pad at 75 station on 01 deck looking aft and slightly to starboard showing the aft 4.5 inch gun and the quarterdeck. Two square pads for saluting guns are at the edge of the deck in the foreground. The bathythermograph winch and outrigger are on the port side. On the starboard side of the quarterdeck are the capstan and the collapsible davit for use with foxer towed bodies and the deck brackets on the centreline are for stowing a twin float foxer body. The ship is berthed port side to the quay and astern are a motor launch, a maintenance punt and the Itchen chain ferry terminal.
