On board the Type 81 general purpose frigate Eskimo (1961) in No. 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard during her 1971-1974 modernisation. The photographer is looking to starboard and aft showing the emergency conning position between 68 and 72 station on the starboard side of 01 deck on the roof of the projectile handing room. The compass is on a stand and the azimuth repeater is next to the ship's rail. A telephone, a telephone control box and a signalling lantern stowage box are against the dwarf bulkhead, abaft which is the stowage area for the portable covers for the lift opening. Berthed alongside the east wall of the basin are stores lighters PAS 1109, PAS 1004 and C42 and the dockyard tug Barbara (1963) is pushing the stores lighter PAS 1001 towards the other lighters. A steam-powered sheerlegs pontoon is in the background and a modernised Rothesay class Type 12 frigate is in the north lock bound in.
