On board the Type 81 general purpose frigate Eskimo (1961) in No. 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard during her 1971-1974 modernisation. The photographer is in the commanding officer's day cabin between 46¼ and 48½ stations on the starboard side of 1 deck looking forward and to starboard showing an electric fire against the ship's side. On the mantelpiece are two short candlesticks, Christmas cards, a telelgram and a trophy bowl with an image of Sedna, the Inuit goddess of the sea, on it. In front of the fire is a drop-leaf coffee table with an ashtray, a cigarette lighter and a silver cigarette box on it. A round table, easy chairs and a sideboard with a tantalus and Christmas cards on it complete the furnishings. The door to the sleeping cabin is open. Standing on its side behind an easy chair is a painting of an air attack on a convoy. The ship's commanding officer at the time was Commander Alan Grose, RN.
