The Type 14 utility frigate Duncan (1957) alongside the fitting out berth in the shipyard of John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd on the River Itchen at Woolston, Southampton. The photographer is on the port side of the forecastle looking forward and to starboard from 11 station on 1 deck showing the oiling at sea roller fairlead in the left foreground and the twin headed steam capstan is in the centre. The cover of the capstan steam and exhaust valves is laid back between two rollers. Hose racks, a telephone, the towing hawse cover plate and a towing hawser are stowed against the raised bulwark. The ship is berthed port side to the quay.
