On board the County class guided missile destroyer London (1961) alongside the fitting out berth at the Neptune Works of Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd at Wallsend-on-Tyne. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the chart room between 57 and 59 stations on the starboard side of 02 deck looking forward and to starboard showing the chart table against the forward bulkhead. A chart of the River Tyne is laid out on the table together with two volumes of the North Sea Pilot and a European Waters Tide Tables for 1963. Above the table are a revolution table, a gyro compass tape type repeater, a speed repeater and a clock reading 03.19. Two telephones and a large book rack are against the starboard side. The rack contains many volumes including various Pilot, Tidal Streams, Tide Tables and The Nautical Almanack, Manual of Seamanship 1951, Admiralty Manual of Navigation 1954 and Ocean Passages for the World, 2nd edition 1950. A settee berth is against the aft bulkhead and Chart Folio No. 6 is on the berth.
