On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is on the starboard side of the flight deck extension at 71 station on 1 deck looking aft and to port showing the quarterdeck between 71 and 80 stations on 2 deck. Covered liferaft stowage and an open deck cleaning gear locker are on the right. The cable reels have canvas covers and some of the bollards have wooden covers which double as seats. The ship's name lifering is mounted on a stand facing the photographer. A seaman is painting the bollards white and another man is fixing red and white ellipsoid floats to the guardrails.
