On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is on the forecastle on 1 deck looking forward from 20 station on the centreline showing the two breakwaters and the raised deck. In the foreground are a stores derrick and awning stanchions with the 4.5 inch shell room flood and spray cabinet and a sea hose couplings locker. A fire hose basket is against the breakwater on the left. The fan supply and exhaust vents abaft the forward breakwater are open.
