On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is on the forecastle on 1 deck looking forward and to port from 20 station on the starboard side showing the aft breakwater. In the foreground are stores derricks and awning stanchions with the 4.5 inch shell room flood and spray cabinet and a sea hose couplings locker. A fire hose basket is against the breakwater on the left. The fan supply and exhaust vents abaft the forward breakwater are open and the cable reels have canvas covers. In the background alongside the north side of the basin is the bow of the type 61 aircraft direction frigate Chichester (1955) udergoing a refit which commenced 24 August 1968 and was completed 27 May 1969.
