An Indiaman being built or repaired in Barnard's Yard, Deptford. Signed by artist. Barnard's Yard in Deptford was one of several privately owned shipbuilding establishments present on the Thames during the 18th and 19th centuries. The yards produced coastal craft and merchant ships for organisations like the East India Company. Some also received contracts to build brigs and sloops for the Navy.
