Tellurium

This tellurium represents the motions of the Moon around Earth and the Earth and Venus around the Sun. It is supported by a wooden baseboard standing on three wooden legs, covered with a printed paper that has scales and images, including representations of Halley's Comet. An ivory tipped handle on the side of the board moves the gears and brackets. The Sun, Moon and brackets are brass, Venus is ivory (one half painted black in order to represent its phases) and the Earth is covered by paper gores. There is a brass plate underneath the earth upon which the phases of the Moon are engraved.

The baseboard bears the inscriptions "Designed for the NEW PORTABLE ORRERIES by W. JONES and Made and Sold by W. & S. Jones 30 Holborn London" and dated 1 January 1794. The terrestrial sphere bears the makers' name: JONES LONDON. The continents are represented in outline and named, as are the oceans. The equator is graduated twice, with degrees and hours, and the tropics are marked.
