Distant Greenwich
A distant view of Greenwich from the south bank of the Thames further east but printed as a reversed image, on light green India paper: that is, the plate was etched 'as seen' but the printed impression is 'flipped'. The tower of St Alfege, Greenwich, and what may be St Paul's, Deptford, are thus shown to the left of the Royal Naval College and Greenwich Power Station to the right, rather than the other way round. In the foreground, Thames barges lie alongside what is probably the tip of the Greenwich peninsula, making the view almost exactly due south in orientation. The northern pair of chimneys of the power station are shown before they were cut down to equal height with the southern pair. Monogrammed and dated 1955 on the plate, lower right, and signed by artist in pencil on the border below.
