Philip's Complete Wheelwork Orrery

This orrery consists of a wooden base with three turned legs supporting the wheelwork for a planetarium with tellurium. The top of the table is painted blue with zodiac and calendar scales and compass directions. The mechanism under table is moved with a winding handle. Above the table are the brass geared mechanism supporting the tellurium, representing the motions of the Earth and Moon, and a brass Sun. Mercury and Venus are attached to this mechanism, while brass arms support five further planet models. These are contained in a separate wooden box, consisting of Mars with two satellites, Jupiter with nine satellites, Saturn with two rings and nine satellites, Uranus with four satellites, and Neptune with one satellite. Also with the orrery is a booklet of information and instructions (the original cover of the booklet has been replaced by handwritten cover). Engraved around the brass disc at the centre of the base plate is the following inscription: "George Philip and Son Ltd., 32 Fleet Street., London EC. Made in England".

The globe is covered with plater and six printed paper gores that are coloured and varnished. It is mounted on a polar axis which is inclined to the ecliptic plane by 66.5 degrees. It is marked with meridians and parallels every 30 degrees, with the prime meridian passing through Greenwich and the equator graduated into degrees. The continents are marked with simple outlines, although the south polar region is empty, and the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans are named.
