The Hon. Samuel Barrington, Admiral of the White. Engraved by J.T. Wedgwood from the original in the possession of the Right Revd the Lord Bishop of Durham
A half-length portrait to left of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with the sea in the background. Lettered below the image ‘The Hon. Samuel Barrington Admiral of the White’ and ‘Engraved by J. T. Wedgwood from the Original in the possession of the Right Revd. the Lord Bishop of Durham.’ This portrait was engraved by John Thomas Wedgwood after an original painting by John Singleton Copley. The prime version of Copley’s portrait was painted, with a pendant pair of Admiral Richard Howe, to flank a panoramic painting of the relief of Gibraltar in October 1782 (see PAI6518). Together, the three paintings were displayed beneath Copley’s massive history painting of the destruction of the floating batteries at Gibraltar, when it was exhibited in a large tent in Green Park, London, in 1791. A version of Copley’s portrait of Barrington is now in the National Portrait Gallery. (Updated April 2019.)
