On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the junior rates mess between 23 and 27 stations on the centreline of 3 deck looking forward on the starboard side showing a full height locker, two kit lockers and a settee bench with drawers under against the starboard side. A table and five chairs are in the centre. On the left against the 4.5 inch ammunition hoist are an electric fire and a mirror with a triple tier bunk unit beyond. Against the forward bulkhead are four kit lockers, a mess locker, four boot or dirty clothes lockers and a Thermotank air conditioning unit.
