On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the emergency conning position between 46 and 48 stations on 02 deck looking to port. Lengths of timber are laying on the deck. The rudder indicator repeater is on a panel next to the forward guardrails which have a canvas dodger fitted to them. Two telephones and a control box are against the port guardrails. The compass is on the left but the engine order transmitter has not been fitted. Dimly seen through the mist against the north wall of the basin is the Type 61 aircraft direction frigate Chichester (1955) undergoing a refit. She has scaffolding round her foremast.
