On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the junior rates mess between 68 and 75 stations on 3 deck looking forward and to starboard from the aft centreline showing two triple tier bunk units, twelve boots or dirty clothes lockers, a bread locker and a Thermotank air conditioning unit against the ship's side on the right. Three tables and nine chairs are in the centre of the space with two mess lockers and a clock reading 10.40 on the left. The back of a stack of six kit lockers have an electric fire and a mirror fixed to them. Seven kit lockers and two boots or dirty clothes lockers are against the forward bulkhead.
