On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the junior rates mess between 57 and 62½ stations on 3 deck looking forward and slightly to starboard from the port side showing two tables and a chair in the foreground. A triple tier bunk unit is on the right and another bunk unit is against the ship's side on the left. Six kit lockers are facing the photographer. Stairs up to 2 deck and an open hatch down to 4 deck are on the right and against the forward bulkhead are a fire main, fire extinguisher, fire hose basket and a transformer.
