On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is on the starboard side of the flight deck at 63 station on 1 deck looking to port and forward showing the port side safety nets and the flight directing officer's window in the hangar. Berthed alongside the north wall of the basin is the Type 61 aircraft direction frigate Chichester (1955) undergoing a refit. Scaffolding is around her foremast and her hull is being painted.
