On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is on the signal deck between 38 and 40 stations on the centreline of 02 deck looking forward showing the covered trelephone and communications table in the centre of the forward screen. A stowage box for hand signalling lanterns is to the right and the pedestal mount for the 20 inch signalling projector is on the extreme right. A Royal Fleet Auxiliary store carrier, either Bacchus (1962) or Hebe (1962), is berthed at the east end of the basin.
