On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the main communications office between 32½ and 35 stations on the starboard side of 2 deck looking to port and forward showing the back of Bay 8, the call sign typist, in the foreground, equipped with a duplicating machine. Behind it is the control circuit exchange unit and the watchbill is fixed to the back of the office door. Against the forward bulkhead are three fuse panels, Bay No. 1 fitted with a D/F receiver F.M.B. and a morse key, Bay No. 2 fitted with B40 and B41 receivers, an Olivetti 82 typewriter and a morse key and Bays 3 and 4 with a canvas cover in front of the equipment. A seaman in working rig is on the right.
