A three-quarter-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon (mostly hidden under his coat) and star of the Order of the Bath and the Glorious First of June gold chain and medal, extending his right arm in a pointing gesture. In the background, a view of Hood’s engagement with the French Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse off Port l’Orient in June 1795. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative border, incorporating the sitter’s coat of arms at the top. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Alexander Hood, Viscount Bridport. OB. 1814. From the Original of Abbot, in the Collection of the Rt. Honble. The Viscountess Bridport.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved by J. Robinson. / The London Printing and Publishing Company.’ This portrait was engraved by John Henry Robinson after Lemuel Francis Abbott’s oil painting of around 1795, now in the Yale Centre for British Art. As noted in the print’s inscription, Abbott’s painting was owned at the time of engraving by the sitter’s widow, Maria Sophia, Viscountess Bridport. The painting was also engraved by Samuel Freeman (see PAD3204) but without the Glorious First of June medal which is shown here. This print was published by the London Printing and Publishing Company. It is a reprint with added decorative border from the plate published by Harding and Lepard on 1 January 1832 (see PAD3203).
