On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the gun direction platform between 31½ and 33½ stations on the centreline of 02 deck looking forward on the starboard side showing the gun direction officer's sight on the left. Against the forward screen are a bearing indicator, an interphone junction box, a target indicator gong, a loudspeaker amplifier, a loudspeaker and an azimuth repeater. Loudspeakers are on either side of the starboard screen. A seaman is working on the MF/DF coil. Berthed against the east end of the basin is the Royal Fleet Auxiliary store carrier Hebe (1962).
