On board the Type 12 general purpose frigate Plymouth (1959) alongside the south side of number 3 basin in Chatham Dockyard at the end of a modernization which commenced in August 1966. The ship is berthed starboard side to the quay. The photographer is in the gun direction platform between 31½ and 33½ stations on the centreline of 02 deck looking to port and forward from the starboard side aft showing the gun direction officer's sight, manufactured by Rose Brothers (G'boro) Ltd of Gainsborough, on the right. Against the port screen are a fire control circuits firing button, two microphones, an angle-fronted cabinet, a fire control panel, a fire control check fire panel and a control unit box. Berthed against the north side of the basin is the Type 61 aircraft direction frigate Chichester (1955) undergoing a refit. she has scaffolding around her foremast and her hull is being painted.
