On board the submarine Walrus (1959) alongside the fitting out berth at Scott's Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd shipyard at Greenock, on the Clyde. The photographer is in the gash (garbage) ejector space between 47 and 49 stations on the port side of the main flat looking to port and aft through the access showing the gash ejector. Garbage is collected into bags which are soaked in the ejector tube to ensure that they will sink. This avoids a tell-tale trail of floating gash on the surface. Cans are squashed. A combined pressure and vacuum gauge by C & A Stewart Ltd of Glasgow is on the right. A main broadcast intercom and the operating instructions for the ejector are on the left. A vertical format negative.
