On board the type 81 general purpose frigate HMS Ashanti (1959) alongside North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard during her September 1968 to April 1970 refit. The photographer is in the 4.5 inch handing room and crew shelter between 37½ and 41½ stations on 1 deck looking to starboard and slightly forward from the port side showing the two ammunition hoists manufactured by Cocksedge & Co Ltd in the foreground. A watertight hatch leads down to 2 deck and an automatic emergency lantern is above it. Ammunition scuttles are in the forweard bulkhead on either side of the hatch. Wire strops and slings, a fire extinguisher and a workbench equipped with a vice are against the aft bulkhead. In the starboard forward corner is the rocket flare ready use locker and the door to the forecastle.
