A Dutch Yacht beating out of a harbour off Kampsen
This meticulous wash drawing, tinted with watercolour, is signed and dated 1699. It shows a Dutch States yacht in the foreground with a Dutch merchant ship beyond. In the background on the right is the port of Kampen situated on the Zuider Zee.
Vitringa joined the guild of St Luke in Alkmaar in 1696, but resigned in 1706 because of illness and impaired vision, which prevented him from practising as an artist, although he is known to have produced works after this date.
