Portrait of the English ship Defiance 60 guns
From an album which has a bookplate of the Bishop of Columbia. The arms on the bookplate are the See of Columbia impaling Bentley.
The drawing has 'Defiance' inscribed in pencil verso and is one of the collection of portraits of some of the ships on which John Bentley served. Also inscribed verso is "No 5" and crossed out is "Defiance", "No 9" (sideways) and "8" (erect).
'Defiance' is shown chasing the French fleet. The occasion is presumably at the Battle of Finisterre, 14th October 1747, had been the ship's commander in Anson's action on May 3rd 1747, when 'Defiance' was commanded by John Bentley. Captain Thomas Grenville, the ship's commander in Anson's action on May 3rd 1747, had been among those killed (W. Laird Clowes "The Royal Navy - a history", vol. III, p. 126). Further evidence in the National Maritime Museum's manuscript collection suggests that Bentley commanded 'Defiance' officially from the end of May 1747 until the beginning of August 1748.
Medium includes pen and ink.
