The photographer is in the junior rates mess between 78 and 85 stations on 2 deck in a recreation space showing a settee bench in a corner with a folding table if the right foreground. A letter rack and a notice board are against the bulkheadon the right and on the notice board is a poster requesting entries for the Tartar's handicraft competition. Against the far bulkhead is the "Gronk's board". In naval parlance a gronk is a lady of less than perfect countenance and physique and photographs of past acquaintances are displayed on the Gronk's board.
