On board the type 81 general purpose frigate HMS Tartar (1960) in Portsmouth Dockyard between November 1973 and April 1974 during a refit. The photographer is in the petty officer's mess between 73 and 78 stations on 2 deck looking forward and to starboard from the port side at 77¾ station showing a folding armchair, three cushioned beer firkins, a round coffee table, two kit lockers numbered 143 and 144 with a record player and a Philip's television set on them, two loudspeaker cabinets and two beer firkins. The bar is on the right with a settee bench beyond it and above the bench is an air conditioning unit. An automatic emergency lantern, more firkins and two more kit lockers are in the background. On the supporting pillar in the centre of the recreation space are letters which get progressively smaller as on an eye test card and which reads "Twice a night weakens the sight".
