On board the type 81 general purpose frigate HMS Tartar (1960) in Portsmouth Dockyard between November 1973 and April 1974 during a refit. The photographer is in the sonar control room between 41 and 43 stations on the starboard side of 1 deck looking forward and slightly to port from the starboard aft corner showing the senior man's chair on a raised platform on the left with an asdic console beyond it.. Against the forward bulkhead are a fan starter panel, a power supply unit, the main starter, the sonar type 1072 playback unit over a tape storage cupboard, a sonar type 170 range and bearing unit, fuse panels and a telephone control box. Facing the ship's side are the four chairs for the bearing console, the centre generator console, the range console and the depth console.
