Specification for Argus (1855) and amended for the yacht Emperor (1856)

20 page specification for the auxiliary Revenue Service Schooner Argus (1855), dated June 1855, and amended for building the Emperor [Shogun] of Japan's yacht Emperor (1856) at the yard of Messrs Green of Blackwall, which was a goodwill gesture towards Japan in 1855 as part of negotiations over trade access. Unsigned.

The auxiliary schooner-rigged yacht Emperor sailed from Plymouth for Japan on Thursday 30 April 1857 [The Times, 2 May 1857]. A description of the yacht interior was reported by The Times on Saturday 25 April 1857. It is depicted in the Illustrated London News, 1857: '"The Emperor" Yacht for presentation by the British Government to the Emperor of Japan'.
