Cutty Sark in summer of 1957 at Greenwich

Watercolour of Cutty Sark at dry dock in Greenwich after 1954-1957 restoration, stern view. Visitors on board the ship, and people looking at the ship from Cutty Sark Gardens. Cutty Sark was opened to visitors in June 1957. This painting is contemporary to that occasion and depicts individuals both on board the Main Deck and inspecting the newly constructed Dry Dock. In the foreground appear to be two naval cadets and two Chelsea pensioners, perhaps drawing a link to Cutty Sark's recent history as a training ship and her new home in Maritime Greenwich, former location of Greenwich Hospital for retired seamen. In the background, the changing landscape around the River Thames can be noted.
