Starboard bow view of an ornate Maltese Luzzu ashore

A whole plate size salted paper print. A starboard bow view of an ornate Maltese Luzzu on stone chocks ashore near the corner of a high stone wall from one of the outer bastions in Grand Harbour. Three oars are resting against the wall and the starboard quarter of a rowing boat is on the right of the image. The upper strake around the bow is decorated with an eye and more abstract images. The side of the stempost has been painted with a figure.

Reverse has been annotated in pencil by Admiral Ballard in 1934: 'Maltese dhaisa'.

Calvert Jones arrived in Malta in late November 1845, writing to Talbot on 24 November about the journey through France. In a letter dated 13 February 1846 from Calvert Jones to William HF Talbot, he lists under 'Large Talbotype' what may be the negative for this print: '6. Large Maltese boat ashore'.

The original negative for this original print is held at the National Science And Media Museum, Science Museum Collection, reference: 1937-1947.
