The Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798: view of the action with Aboukir fort in the foreground
This drawing shows a slightly aerial view of Aboukir Fort looking roughly south along the anchored French fleet, with the 'Goliath' and other leading British ships doubled round and overwhelming the ships at the head of the enemy line. At this point Nelson and the rest of the fleet were engaging from seaward with the centre of the French line but a British ship is shown clearly doing so in this unfinished sketch. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 81.
