Falkland Islands and the building of the wireless telegraph station

A green cloth and black leather bound album containing over 100 black/white contact prints relating to the Falkland Islands.

Contents: The album contains many views of wild life (including penguins) on the Falklands, the construction of a wireless station there and views of Stanley, general views of South Georgia, the hut used by Dr Bruce on his Antarctic expedition in 1902 on South Orkneys, and the graves of those who died at the battle of the Falklands in 1914. Ships represented include SS Freshfield (1896), HMS Edinburgh Castle (1910), HMS Orama (1911) and HMS Lysander (1913).

The Admiralty 150kw wireless station was installed by Marconi in 1915 to improve communications with the Northern Hemisphere after the battle of Coronel in 1914. On 7 March 1915 the Ismailia sailed for the Falkland Islands carrying equipment for building roads and concrete reinforced buildings for the wireless station as well as 200 men. Six weeks later the Freshfield (1896) followed having been fitted out as living quarters for the party and carrying provisions to last the men for 18 months. The wireless station was brought into service the last quarter of 1916. One of the identified photographers is presumably W D Lacey who went out to the Falkland Islands in 1912 to man the existing wireless station. See Wireless World December 1916.
