The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805; the attack viewed from the head of the French squadron of the Combined Fleet
This drawing is almost the final development of Pocock's composition for his painting showing the start of the action, which was subsequently engraved in Clarke and MacArthur's ‘The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson’ of 1809 (NMM BHC0548). In this version, however, the French and Spanish Combined Fleet's crescent formation is still intact and is not so far advanced into the lower right corner of the image. The two British lines – Nelson's weather division, headed by 'Victory' in the centre and Collingwood's leeward line beyond – are also shown as just out of action. While the oil painting shows the leading ships of both sides as they engage in the action. The name 'San Augustino' is on the reverse with some slight sketches. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 90.
