The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805: the fleets engaging, with a schematic plan view

Inscribed in ink by Pocock, 'before the Battle, taken from the NNE or Van of the Combined Fleets', this drawing looks southward down the long arc of the approaching Franco-Spanish battle line. It shows Nelson and Collingwood's two attacking lines intercepting the Franco-Spanish Combined Fleets from the seaward side (west). Nelson's weather division is closer, headed by 'Victory', with a repeating frigate that is probably the 'Euryalus', nearer the viewer, on the far right. Above the drawing is a schematic plan of the scene in which the ships are indicated as short pencil dashes. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 91.
